iPad video journalism comes of age at NAB 2012

image

Ever since I saw the 3rd-generation iPad (2012), I began to have visions of its use for video journalism. Many of ProVideo Coalition magazine readers sent me private enthusiastic comments about my pre-NAB iPad articles like Avid now lets you edit video on your iPad for US$4.99. Should you?, Why…

Media Apps for Android Tabs, Part III

Here’s a question for you—when you view the contents of a newspaper on your Android tablet, are you reading the paper or using a tablet?  If you feel like the question is academic, you’re probably not in the publishing business.  Publishers are wrestling with this existential stuff around the clock, for reasons that are, well, central to their existence.

Google Translate Updated for Android

Who knew there even was a translate app from Google?

I am embarrassed to say I wasn’t even aware that the near excellent translate service was available for Android.  If you didn’t already know…now you do.  What’s more, it’s been updated, specifically for the ongoing crisis in Japan.

Toodledo iOS App Updated

From Toodledo, here’s what to expect:

Here is what is new:
✔ The “Alarm” field can now be reordered, enabled and disabled independently from the due-date field.

✔ Improved accessibility for visually disabled customers who use the VoiceOver screen reader.
✔ Fixed a bug that caused a crash when a question mark was in the name of a tag.

HTC Flyer Has My Attention

image

Some new info hits the streets

According to BGR.com, HTC is expecting their upcoming Flyer tablet to fly off the shelves. (pun intended).

The 7-inch screen, 1.5GHz processorm 1GB of RAM and 2 camera unit has my attention.  Not even so much for all of that, but because there is a stylus.  What!?  A stylus?  Not as a replacement for touch and multi-touch, but in addition to.  You see, HTC seems to understand that some of us like to pull out a pen and write down a phone number, or jot a note.  That has my attention.

iPad 2: Online Orders Start Shipping, New Orders Delayed, Jailbroken Already

image

Lots of weekend news on the iPad 2

If you ordered the iPad 2 online when it was first available in the wee hours of Friday last week, you may have learned your unit is shipping.  Apparently some WiFi and Verizon iPad 2 units have started the process.  In a move unusual for Apple, online orders seem to have taken a back seat to in store purchases.

In the past, you had the ability to pre-order products from Apple.  Usually the delivery day coordinated with the in-store on sale date.  Meaning smart online customers received their products the ame date without the hassles of line waiting.  Not so this time around.  In fact, we are informed the earliest online orders will hit will be Wed or Thursday this week.  What’s worse, if you didn’t set your alarm Friday morning to place your order, online orders have been getting pushed back from 2-3 weeks, to 3-4 weeks.

All this extra time waiting means that when you get your iPad 2 you’ll now be able…

Rio - Angry Birds New Game, To Be Exclusive on Amazon App Store For Period

image

How long will it be exclusive?

As often with news bits, there may be more questions than answers with Rio and the announcement that Amazon will have an exclusive.  Does this mean the iOS version will not happen?  Unlikely.  Does this mean that Amazon will have an indefinite exclusive?  Also unlikely but that would have meant that Amazon would have spent a great deal of money to get it.  Smart move by Amazon.

iPad Market Share 73% in Fourth Quarter

image

Research firm IDC suggests Apple’s market share dropped 20 points from 93% to 73% in the fourth quarter.

New competition from the android camp, has caused a pretty big drop in Apple’s tablet market share.

While there is no reason to sell Apple stock just yet, it is interesting how quickly a competitor has come along and taking 20% of Apple’s market share.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10) - more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the third quarter. Apple’s share came down from 93% in 3Q10 to 73% in 4Q10, but still reflected Apple’s strong leadership position. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated.
